ENT Surgery & Procedures | Amandeep Hospital
Have you ever imagined if any of your body parts stop functioning properly? It is indeed a nightmare to imagine the same. Your body is a combination of various body parts whose dysfunction in any sense can harm your health. We generally talk of cardiac health, neurological disorders, or other such diseases but less is being mentioned about ENT surgery and procedures. It needs appropriate attention.
What is ENT?
ENT is a field of science that deals with the treatment of disorders in the ear, nose, and throat. It is also known by the name Otolaryngology. The ENT specialist or Otolaryngologist is the one who treats such disorders with expertise.
Ear surgery and procedures
There are various causes of ear infections that can lead you towards visiting an Otolaryngologist to get the disorder treated. Such causes can be too much ear wax, hearing loss, prolonged noise exposure, aging, object stuck in the ear, or the side effects of medication. The doctor may recommend undergoing a surgical procedure to correct the condition of chronic ear infections.
Myringoplasty
This surgery is performed to repair a hole in the eardrum and in such a case where there is no middle ear infection or any disease of the ear bone. The middle ear is closed in a natural way which may also improve hearing. The defect in the eardrum is repaired using tissue grafts.
Tympanoplasty
This surgery attempts to improve hair loss by inspecting the ear spaces for any disease. It eliminates the ear infection and repairs the sound transmitting mechanism and the eardrum. Generally, a piece of cartilage is used to stiffen the eardrum in an attempt to stop recurrent retraction pockets.
Mastoidectomy
The mastoid space connects with the middle ear space. This surgery aims to clean out the mastoid which is generally done through an incision behind the ear. The abnormal contents are cleaned out after removing the outer layer of the bone. The surgery is completed by either gluing back the incision or closing with dissolvable sutures.
Mastoidectomy (modified) Radical
The purpose of this surgery is to eliminate the infection without considering the improvement in the ear and it is performed upon those patients who have resistant infections. Talking about nose surgery, there are many disorders that disrupt the normal workings of the nose. Such disorders range from nasal obstructions, chronic sinusitis to tumors of the nose and sleep-disordered breathing and snoring. For correcting such disorders, one may need to undergo various surgical procedures.
Turbinates Reduction
Turbinates are the small structures present inside the nose that cleanse and humidify the nostrils into the lungs. It is a procedure in which a needle-like is inserted into the turbinates. During the procedure, energy is transmitted to the tissue to cause controlled damage. By the time the healing process occurs, the turbinates get reduced.
Septoplasty
Alternatively known as submucous septal resection and septal reconstruction, this is a corrective surgical procedure to straighten and reposition a deviated nasal septum in the middle of the nose. The nasal septum is the partition between the two nasal cavities.
Rhinoplasty
It is also called plastic surgery for the nose and is basically a surgery that changes the size, shape, or proportions of your nose. During the surgery, nasal cartilages and bones are modified. This surgery aims to correct deformities from an injury, birth defects, or breathing problems.
FESS
Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), deals with chronic sinusitis by surgical means to improve the functioning of the sinuses by clearing the diseased mucosa and opening the sinuses.
Throat and neck surgery procedures
You may generally experience a sore throat due to infection. Other major problems that may affect your throat are tonsillitis, pharyngitis, croup or laryngitis, cancer. The doctor may recommend the patient undergo suitable surgical procedures in order to correct the disorders and prevent any further damage.
Tonsillectomy
It is a surgical procedure to remove tonsils- two small glands located in the back of your throat. Tonsils help fight infection but sometimes they get infected which calls for their removal. The doctor may opt for the most appropriate procedure to perform this surgery as there are a few options available for procedures like coblation tonsillectomy, laser tonsillectomy, standard tonsillectomy with cold instruments.
Thyroidectomy
It is a procedure in which the thyroid gland is removed partially (hemithyroidectomy) or the whole gland is removed (total thyroidectomy) in cases where the gland is the site of the disease which may range from the non-cancerous enlarged gland to cancer in the gland.
Submandibular gland excision
Submandibular glands are paired glands that are part of the salivary secretory glands around the neck, these are located under the lower jaw on each side. Due to a long-standing infection or stone in the secretory duct of the gland, it can swell and cause pain and needed to be removed. This swelling can also be the site of cancer.
Parotidectomy — Parotids are another pair of glands responsible for saliva production which are located below the pinna on each side. Due to a long-standing infection or stone in the secretary duct of the gland, it can swell and cause pain and needed to be removed. This swelling can also be the site of cancer.
Other benign neck swellings
Thyroglossal cyst is the defect in the thyroid gland during its formation at its normal site during birth. Branchial fistula/cyst, lymphangioma neck are other disorders of the neck since birth which are needed to be corrected by surgery by an ENT surgeon.
Throat cancer surgery
There are multiple options available to treat throat cancer depending upon the requirement of the case.
Vocal cord stripping: In this technique, outer layers of the tissue on the vocal cords are removed using a long surgical instrument.
Laser surgery: An endoscope with a high-intensity laser on the tip is inserted down the throat in order to vaporize or cut down the tumor using the laser.
Cordectomy: A part or all of the vocal cords are removed in this surgery. This approach is suitable to treat glottis cancer which is very small or located only on the surface tissues.
Myocutaneous flaps: The throat is reconstructed using muscle and skin from a nearby area that is rotated toward the throat.
Lymph node removal: In cases where cancer spreads to the lymph nodes in the neck, surgery to remove the lymph nodes might be recommended.
Laryngectomy: An operation in which a part or whole of the larynx is removed. It may be partial (removing only that portion of the voice box where cancer exists) or total (removing the entire voice box).
